Boat title, HIN and paperwork

Before paying, make sure the boat, seller and documents tell the same story. State rules differ, so check the boating agency where you will register it.

Match the HIN

The hull identification number identifies the boat. Compare the characters on the hull with the title or registration and any bill of sale. Even one incorrect character can refer to a different vessel, as the U.S. Coast Guard's HIN guidance explains.

Ask about ownership and liens

Ask the seller to show the required ownership document and whether a lender still has an interest. A clean-looking listing is not proof of a clear title. Confirm the exact release and transfer process with the state agency or lender before sending funds.

Record the sale

Make sure any bill of sale accurately records the buyer, seller, boat description, HIN, price and date. Some states require notarization, additional forms, or a separate transfer for a trailer or outboard motor.
